In year 9 we will follow the BTEC level 2 business course where the students will learn what a business is and what makes a successful one. The students will then be led though a series of activities which will culminate in the production of a business plan, for a business idea that they have come up with, usually in an area of interest to them outside of school; examples previously are games shop, tack shops, diners, leisure centre.
In year 10 & 11 the students will complete a GCSE course which is the Edexcel GCSE (9-1). The course will cover the following topics;
Enterprise and entrepreneurship, spotting a business opportunity, putting a business idea into practice, making the business effective, understanding external influences on business, growing the business, making marketing / operational / financial and human resources decisions.
The course will be examined with 2 papers, each being 1 hour and 30 minutes long. Paper 1 focuses on small business whilst paper 2 concentrates on building a business.
The skills and knowledge taught are relevant to a wide range of careers and further education courses such as:
- Industry and Commerce
- Professions such as banking and accountancy
- Management/administration posts in areas such as leisure, sport and the arts
- Being self employed
- BTEC National Diploma
- AS/A2 levels
