Curriculum Intent
At The Stonehenge School our Maths curriculum in designed to:
- Help pupils to understand and communicate in the world they live in, and to navigate our global data rich society. Maths is key for cultural and financial literacy into adulthood, and we make links to the relevance and uses of maths in all walks of life.
- Allow pupils to be fluent in the fundamental skills in maths, and to be able to use these to reason and to solve problems.
- Allow students to ‘Think Big’, whether that is through studying some of the key skills necessary in everything from global finance to space travel, or from contemplating the meaning of infinity to developing logical proof.
We believe that pupil engagement is the key to progress in maths, and that pupils progress more in maths when they remember not only what they did, but what they were thinking about in lessons. We find that most pupils enjoy their maths lessons and thrive on the classroom culture we try to create – where they are free to make mistakes, ask questions and learn from their teacher in a safe and positive working environment. We believe that all pupils can make progress in maths, regardless of prior attainment, and look to create a sense of resilience both in the classroom and in private study.
