Curriculum Intent

The Physical Education curriculum at Stonehenge aims to support all students to become physically literate through an exciting variety of high-quality physical activities that build the character and knowledge required to empower all students to lead happy, healthy, and active lives. Our extensive practical programme engages and inspires all students to participate in and unlock a diverse, challenging pathway through competitive, leadership, creative, health and fitness activities, promoting a positive attitude towards love and life-long commitment to sport and physical activity and fostering sporting excellence.

We deliberately teach a concept-led curriculum where students develop their subject knowledge, physical competence, and are empowered to ‘think big’. Physical activity is used to develop interpersonal skills, respect, and well-being whilst students continue to develop a deep understanding of movement, skills, and strategy, ensuring that students understand the impact of participation on their performance, health, and self-esteem, which supports them to make informed choices throughout their lives.

We are committed to empowering our students through being physically active and nurturing their sense of personal responsibility, motivation, confidence, and independence. Students benefit enormously from participating, communicating, and connecting as a team whilst strengthening their interpersonal and leadership skills. Opportunities to step outside their comfort zones to take on new social, physical, and emotional challenges within a supportive environment noticeably underpin their personal growth. Students are encouraged to think critically and honestly about ethics, discrimination, barriers to participation and the influence and power of sports on society, participation, and culture; developing a passion for lifelong learning and global citizenship.

Year 9 - Gateway Year

The gateway year is intended to supplement and solidify earlier knowledge; it allows fundamentals to investigate theory concepts and introduces how the body’s systems function to create movement. The PE gateway is designed to offer theory through practise, when possible, while continuing to apply the rules, skills, and understanding of practical sport through performance analysis.

The goal of the year is to build and link knowledge and comprehension of practical and theoretical elements, allowing for customised learning and understanding in a deeper, one-of-a-kind approach for the students; this includes lifestyle choices and their impact on performance, body systems, and drugs in sport.
