SCIENCE

As a department, we strive to make science exciting, challenging and relevant to everyday life.   Our key aims are to:

  • Stimulate all pupils' curiosity and excitement about the events in the World around them.
  • Encourage pupils to think critically and creatively.
  • Develop practical skills and awareness of health and safety issues.
  • Help pupils' to understand how scientific ideas have contributed to technological and medical advances.
  • Help pupils' to analyse, evaluate and draw conclusions in a scientific way.
  • Encourage pupils' to consider both ethical and controversial issues in science.
  • Develop pupils' ICT skills throughout the science curriculum.
  • Establish cross curricular links with other departments within the school.

All science lessons are organised in line with the principles of the National Science Strategy, incorporating a 3 part lesson structure, clear objectives and effective teaching and learning strategies.  They involve a substantial proportion of direct teaching and practical work, with the emphasis on investigative skills.
