| Key Stage 3 (Years 7, 8 and 9) |
Students study either French or German when they arrive in Year 7. Teaching is tailored to a more conversational approach and in appropriate topic areas aspects of grammar, linguistics and culture are brought in to add depth, detail and colour to student learning. They receive approximately 5 hours of tuition a fortnight with homework set on top of this.
Course books are used which give a broad outline to student studies. Teachers also draw upon a wide range of departmental resources which include a range of extra reading material and access to language videos and listening material.
Students get regular access to computer suites where they make good use of computer and video conferencing software plus dedicated language learning websites designed to reinforce classroom learning.
Students also have regular access to our language assistant who works with small groups and individuals to help improve their conversational abilities and pronunciation.

Key Stage 4 (Year 10 and 11)
|
| Students follow a GCSE course that tests linguistic ability in the 4 key areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing. A wide range of topic areas are covered and students are expected to develop their conversational, written and grammatical skills that will allow for measured and extended communication which will include use of past, present and future tenses. Coursework is an integral part of the 2 year term of study which allows all of our students to demonstrate what they have learnt to the best of their ability. |

SPANISH |
Some of the more able teaching groups in Year 9 take up Spanish at an introductory level. This allows them to get a taste of the language and helps them to decide whether this is an option they would like to take for GCSE. Spanish at Key Stage 4 is only studied as a second language. |
| TRIPS |
There are regular trips for students from Year 8 upwards to France , Germany and Spain . Trips are residential and incorporate a mixture of linguistic challenges and cultural awareness. Students benefit hugely on many different levels not least from a chance to experience life away from home in a foreign country. |
