TEXTILES

We follow the national curriculum through a range of projects. Students have access to sewing machines and a wide range of materials as well as fabric paints, dyes, and batik equipment.

Students also have the opportunity to use the CAD program "Adobe Photoshop" and have access to a scanner and coloured printer.

Year 7

Students work on a wall piece based on their personality. Students learn the process of "Batik" and "Appliqué" hand stitching, fabric dying and adding embellishments to their work. They finish off their wall piece using the sewing machine.

 

Year 8

Students work on a wall hanging" based on "Sea-Life" Students learn how to fabric paint their fish effectively and appliqué it to the background. They add hand-stitching techniques and embellishments. They also use the sewing machine to add decoration to their wall piece.

 

Year 9

Students choose their favourite animal or an animal that represents their personality. They produce a cushion, learning how to add fastenings and construct it appropriately. They fabric paint their animal and then use appliqué to add it to the cushion. Students may also wish to use the Adobe Photoshop program to eventually transfer print their design. By the end of year 9 Students can use the sewing machine confidently.

Year 10 (start of GCSE course)

In year 10 Textiles is a creative course that includes a great deal of drawing, researching, making and evaluating. In year 10 we research the project the theme "natural forms" and in year 11 students choose a theme themselves using a question on the "mock" paper.

Year 11

In year 11 Students work on the theme "location" as well as studying a Textile designer and are asked to base their work on that designer.

The projects are entered as coursework and coursework is worth 60% of the final grade for the GCSE.

The examination/controlled test is a practical test and is taken over 2 full days with breaks in between. The controlled test is worth 40% of the final grade.
